BLACK RATINGS SYSTEM

TV networks often lack sensitivity in depicting the various ethnic groups and multiculturalism that make up American society. Neither all-white nor all-black sitcoms express the reality of daily life for most people.

CHARACTER CODES

A panel of YAAAMS contributors was assembled for the purpose of analyzing various dimensions of black characters and documenting the consistency with which the media presents negative stereotypes in relation to physical characteristics.

STEREOTYPE GUIDELINES

Stereotypes are generalizations about a group of people whereby we attribute a defined set of characteristics to this group. These classifications can be positive or negative such as when various nationalities are stereotyped as friendly or unfriendly.
